The Basics of Making Avocado Toast
Choosing the Right Bread
Selecting the Best Bread The best avocado toast, as I would like to think, is made on solid, thickly cut entire grain bread. The brilliantly toasted bread provides a hard foundation and a fresh, breaking contrast to the smooth avocado.
Selecting Perfect Avocados
How to Choose the Best Avocados Avocados from Hass should be ripe enough but not too much. Try not to use avocados that are wet or fragile inside. Instead, look for avocados that have a small amount of a delicate smash in them. When you cut them open, scoop out any brown or damaged parts and dispose of them before crushing the rest.
Mash your avocado separately
Mashed avocado is richer and creamier than sliced avocado (think guacamole versus plain avocado). On the other hand, do not use it on toast! You run the risk of poking holes in your toast or breaking it. Cut your avocados down the center, wipe out the pit, scoop the tissue into a bowl or onto the side of your plate, and pound it up with a fork. Using a large number of avocados in a single mash? Use a potato masher or pastry cutter instead of a small fork.
Don’t forget the salt
You’ll want to mix in at least a pinch of salt per avocado half.
Avocado Toast Recipe
Ingredients
1 slice of bread (I like thick-sliced whole-grain bread best)
½ ripe avocado
Pinch of salt
Optional: Any of the extra toppings suggested in this post.
Instructions for avocado toast
Toast your slice of bread until it is golden and firm. Remove the avocado from its pit. Make use of a large spoon to extract the flesh. Blend it in with a fork in a bowl until it is pretty much as smooth as you like it. The mixture should be seasoned with a pinch of salt, or about 1/8 teaspoon, and more salt may be added if necessary. Top your toast with avocado and any optional toppings you like. Enjoy your meal.
Bonus Tips
Add garlic:Add garlic: you can toast your bread after you can add finely crushed garlic and coconut oil in your cooking pan.
Add fresh leafy herbs or your favorite herbed sauce: Chopped fresh basil, cilantro, dill or parsley are all good with avocado. So is a drizzle of pesto, zhoug sauce (spicy cilantro sauce), or chimichurri.
More extras: Quick-pickled onions or radishes or jalapeños, your favorite hot sauce, or a sprinkle of sliced cherry tomatoes.
Avocado Toast Variations
Here are my official favorite avocado toast variations, shown from top to bottom.
Bagel Avocado Toast
Top your avocado toast with a generous amount of everything bagel seasoning. Use my recipe for an all-bagel blend to make your own. These seasonings are typically salty, so be careful not to over-salt your avocado.
Tomato-Basil Avocado Toast with Balsamic Drizzle
Combine toasted sunflower seeds, green onion, jalapeo (with the seeds and ribs removed), and chopped fresh radish. Apply a generous amount to your toast.
Cafe Gitane-Style Avocado Toast
The avocado toast craze is said to have begun in this NYC café. Spread a thick layer of crushed avocado over your toast, spread it so it’s smooth and mounded, then shower with 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, and a liberal sprinkle of red pepper drops and flaky salt.
Loaded Avocado Toast
Green onion, jalapenos with their seeds and ribs removed, and chopped fresh radish should all be included. Give your toast a generous amount.
